As one of the best exhibition facilities on the continent, this venue offers unlimited opportunity to host a 5-star world class event. INDOOR EXHIBITIONS Exhibitors from the local South African arena will be invited and carefully selected and should have the ability and recourses to execute interesting and progressive displays at a very high standard. International participants will be approached and included for the offering to be very aspirational and specific. Multipurpose exhibition halls at the Johannesburg Expo Centre provide 50 000m² of prime under roof space with state-of-the-art amenities and ample parking facilities in a safe and secure environment. OUTDOOR EXHIBITIONS With over 100 000m² of outdoor exhibition space at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, large scale and interactive displays and demonstrations can be facilitated where the latest in innovation and technology can be displayed. Again, local and international participants will be included selectively to compliment the rest of the AGRI IMBIZO Showcase. ANIMAL SHOWS Livestock attracts much attention at any agricultural event and it would be no different at AGRI IMBIZO. Classic livestock auctions and competitive shows across all animal breeds will be hosted on a daily schedule. Other animal shows will be featured, like bird shows, domestic animal shows and small farm animals to be used in children’s education and programs at the event. ORGANIC FARM By including an organic farm and organic produce, the expo will be able to attract individuals that support organic food production. These individuals are not necessarily interested in farming practices, but the organic products derived thereof. By attracting this group – the expo aims to educate a larger audience as to where their food comes from and encourage them to get involved in organic self-sustainable food production themselves. The expo will feature ideas, speakers, seminars, education and information on how this can be done successfully – no matter how big or small you wish to grow. DEMONSTRATIONS Active demonstrations will include indoor and outdoor shows. Exhibitions will be held to showcase the implements, machinery and equipment in action – exhibiting their abilities. The demonstrations will include an array of machinery such as implements, tractors and other vehicles, loaders and forklifts, drones and the latest agricultural innovations. The best options in fertilizer, pesticides and seeds will also be demonstrated according to performance, yield and cost effectiveness. These demonstrations and performances will create an exciting attraction not only to parties interested in agriculture, but also 4X4 and outdoor enthusiasts, and parties from other industries - industries that make use of forklifts and loaders, for example. LEADERSHIP SUMMIT The heartbeat of the AGRI IMBIZO initiative relies strongly on leadership and direction from international visionaries. As part of a close network, South African business people and Government officials will encourage and invite world political and business leaders to convene at AGRI IMBIZO to discuss global agricultural issues at a high level, from a global food security perspective. INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS Influential key players on the continent as well as delegates from various industries and businesses across the world, will gather at AGRI IMBIZO to discuss, plan and develop programs pertaining to agriculture, food production, arable land development, education, food security and other relevant topics to direct the agricultural year ahead. AGRICULTURAL SEMINARS AGRI IMBIZO aims to attract speakers from all over South Africa and ultimately around the world with topics such as sustainable farming, subsistence farming, agricultural processes, remedies, pointers on how to increase your yield and decrease your expenses. These speakers will also include experts in the different areas of agriculture such as crop farming, various livestock farming and expense control, how to manage a small-scale and commercial type farm, precision farming and the latest technology in the agricultural industry. This group of expert speakers will be made up of soil scientists, agriculturalists, farmers currently practicing sustainable and subsistence farming successfully, machinery experts, engineers and individuals making headway in agricultural technology. Seminars will form part of a daily program held in conjunction with the career expo featuring agricultural schools and universities that make training and education in these fields available. CAREER EXPO Due to the negative stigma connected with farming and any agricultural practice, younger generations do not attend the agricultural schools anymore. Today’s generations believe that farming is precarious work and rather strive to enter the cities and skyscrapers with jobs in finance and investment. What they do not realise is that without the farming industry the financial and investment industries will not even exist. No farmers directly translates to no food production of any kind, no materials for textile and clothing production and so much more. AGRI IMBIZO will invite agricultural schools and universities with programs in agriculture to join the exhibit and educate visitors about these programs. These exhibitions will feature as a career expo that focuses on agriculture and all that it entails. Institutions may use this opportunity as an “open day” of sorts and reach a much bigger audience, not only in the areas they are situated but also aspiring young people from across the country and continent. The goal is to encourage the younger generations to pursue careers in the agricultural sector and get involved in any and other practices regarding food production and farming. ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAM A daily entertainment program featuring aspirational and famous entertainers will be incorporated into what would be available at AGRI IMBIZO. Artists and performers will be hand selected for their quality and versatility to appeal to all groups within the AGRI IMBIZO target market. Because of the Expo Centre’s great location, large crowds - particularly the youth - can be enticed to join in at the events at AGRI IMBIZO which will feature a fantastic ensemble of musicians across many genres. By including all of the above in the design of the AGRI IMBIZO exhibition, the event will attract a vast amount of individuals from various target markets. This will ensure higher counts of foot traffic and an increased reach of the agricultural industry. AGRI IMBIZO wishes to instill a food producing mind-set in younger generations and pointing out that a career or business in agriculture is not precarious, but in reality very promising and fulfilling work. AGRI IMBIZO would like to inspire young people in South Africa and the world to start farming and contribute to the development of Africa in particular as the food basket of the world. A HUNGRY MAN IS NOT A FREE MAN Home The Global Perspective The South African Scenario The Ultimate Platform Useful Links Contact Us THE GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Enough has been written about world hunger, food shortages, sustainable agriculture and food security, yet despite the disturbing statistics that blind us to their daily reality, there is still no evidence that real solutions to these global dilemmas have been found. Have we given up on finding the true reasons for the food crisis on our planet and the solutions to these very real problems? As global pioneers and world leaders, is this the heritage we wish to leave to our children’s children? Driven, motivated and ambitious as we are, should we not stand united and actively plan and implement true, workable long-term positive outcomes to these challenges? Since the creation of the human race, the quest for freedom at various levels has inspired many. Dating back to ancient times, people have strived to live in freedom and this notion will never change. To live a life in freedom is to live a life without fear. However, as Kofi Annan once stated: “A HUNGRY MAN IS NOT A FREE MAN”. We need to understand that food security is a critical factor in global security. People who are hungry and living under the dark shadow of starvation are easily manipulated by those promising a better life. An empty stomach is never a good political advisor. In 2001 the FAO defined food security as follows: “A situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economical access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.” Food security means not having to fear for one’s next meal. It means being set free from the chains of hunger and, just as importantly, being set free from the fear that accompanies hunger. And as Kofi Annan further writes: “Food security and the eradication of hunger are the first steps toward creating a world of truly sustainable development.” WORKING TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE THAT WORLD. “Food security and the eradication of hunger are the first steps toward creating a world of truly sustainable development.” THE COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION The Global Food Security Index (GFSI) considers the core issues of affordability, availability, quality and safety across a set of 109 countries. The index is a dynamic quantitative benchmarking model, constructed from 28 unique indicators that measure these drivers of food security across both developing and developed countries. These include such areas as infrastructure and programmes to ensure nutrition, food safety and farmer financing. The cost of food and its impact on household incomes have an almost immediate effect on food security, while infrastructure upgrades, improvements to national diets and the implementation of nutritional standards take longer to show results. Guided by the GFSI, one can easily see at a glance what is necessary to address in terms of food production by geographical location, and top performing countries can be mimicked for food security improvement. When viewing a global food crisis from a distance, all factors considered, it is plain to see that every country should ensure that its own people have food. A global view on food production should be: “CREATE FARMERS, NOT FEEDERS” The term feed has a strong reference to giving food to an animal, as in “animal feed”. When feeding an animal, or a person for that matter, it clearly implies that the person is dependent on the feeder which would be contradictory to the freedom highlighted earlier. Creating farmers, food producers at every level within an individual country structure, creates an independent and free nation for that country which can flourish economically. The problems with a hungry nation are numerous, but to highlight a few of the obvious: A hungry person is not even at level one on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, impossible to move upward A hungry person is very difficult to educate A hungry person focuses all his/her attention and energy on the next meal A hungry person has poor health A hungry person has little hope, few ambitions and no drive to prosper A hungry person can easily lean towards crime in desperation A hungry person might seek refuge in unhealthy habits such as substance abuse A hungry person struggles to live a life with high moral standards A hungry person has a low self-esteem A hungry person gives birth to an undernourished child A hungry person is a product of his/her circumstances, same for the offspring The above-mentioned create a weak, non-prospering population with direct and long standing ramifications on the economy of a country. Yet, to feed a person for a day or a week, does NOT make them free to flourish and prosper. People, nations and countries need to produce food, more food and better food. Food production points directly to agriculture – the sector which requires urgent and continuous international attention. FOR A PLANET WITHOUT FOOD IS A PLANET WITHOUT LIFE. The most important thrust towards development of business within the agricultural sector should be directed at the younger generation. The youth is savvy and successful - agricultural business investment belongs to them. In no other industry will young workers and investors find a greater and more innovative opportunity than within the agricultural industry. No greater return on investment No greater lifestyle No greater reward A LIFE IN AGRICULTURE HAS NO MATCH. Concentrated government focus and public-private partnerships are crucial to progress in structural elements of food security. A HUNGRY MAN IS NOT A FREE MAN Home The Global Perspective The South African Scenario The Ultimate Platform Useful Links Contact Us THE SOUTH AFRICAN SCENARIO Despite the political and economic advances seen in South Africa since 1994, the country is plagued by poverty and unemployment and following the recent global economic crisis, by steep food and fuel prices, high-energy tariffs and increasing interest rates. These adverse conditions have placed severe pressure on ordinary South Africans already struggling to meet their basic household needs. Thus, a proper definition of the term food insecurity and measures that are suitable for the South African context must be urgently developed. With South Africa ranking at number 41 on the Global Food Security Index, it also has some food production challenges of its own. Given the opportunity of a vast land at 1 210 090km², South Africa can definitely increase its arable land from the current less than 10% of its total land. Although agriculture is the smallest contributor to the county’s GDP, it is definitely a sector open for massive growth. Because of the country’s strong income from its industry and services, coupled by its geographical favourable positioning, it can bridge the gap between agriculture and industry in the same positive way as the USA do so effectively. Furthermore, it can certainly improve on its low food quality and safety rating and its food availability score. The local challenge is to bring food producers up to a world standard in agriculture, for them to embrace innovation, technology and scientific precision farming. Mechanisation and progressive thinking form part of this shift, something easily demonstrated at an agricultural fair such as AGRI IMBIZO. A HUNGRY MAN IS NOT A FREE MAN Home The Global Perspective The South African Scenario The Ultimate Platform Useful Links Contact Us THE ULTIMATE PLATFORM The world needs a forum where it can confer to find practical methods to educate nations and to develop agriculture to ultimately secure sufficient global food production. This vision is what birthed the idea to stage an international, diverse and influential agricultural showcase with various partners, exhibitors, entertainers and speakers. This is how the AGRI IMBIZO Agricultural Showcase came to life. This show will take on the form of a large scale indoor and outdoor exhibition over a period of 7 days, focusing on agriculture and relevant businesses incorporating live events, a leadership summit and a seminar series conference. The core objective of the AGRI IMBIZO exhibition concept is to create global awareness around farming practises and agriculture as a whole. Although South Africa will host this live event as the country spearheading many initiatives in agriculture on the continent, the focus will not only be on South Africa or Africa for that matter, but rather on a global target market to give agriculture new appeal - to make business and investment in agriculture alluring and exciting. Through awareness about agriculture, education on how farming processes work, AGRI IMBIZO aims to attract the youth of specifically South Africa, but ultimately the future generations all over the globe and entice them to participate in the practices of agriculture and provide young farmers with the necessary skills to become successful food producers. Although the AGRI IMBIZO concept aims to target a specific group of young, future producers, the overall design of the exhibition will appeal to a diverse audience, as the showcase will not only consist of agricultural attractions. The main focus will be on farming practices, but exhibitors will also include an array of clothing, accessories and organic supplies – including markets with food and other products, universities, “kiddie’s corners”, agricultural schools, seminars and of different agricultural machinery, implements and state-of-the-art technology. By including other exhibitors from different industries it is ensured that a diverse audience will attend the showcase. By attracting a diverse audience, the possibility of individuals, outside of the agricultural sector, being exposed to the processes of “getting food on the table”, will increase. The exposure could persuade these individuals to become part of the agricultural community and aid in the mission to create food security and sustainable food production across the globe. By including clothing, accessories, organic supplies and other products in the exhibition the visitors will be educated and made aware of the industries that will suffer under the crippling of the entire agricultural industry. Without farmers, of any kind, countless number industries would be affected. Many people forget that we are dependent on farmers not only for food production but also for products such as leather, cotton, wool, silk, rubber and paper. Industries and economies are all affected directly and indirectly by the way in which farmers supply. Think of one simple example: the massive Starbucks brand and business will cease to exist without coffee farmers – an empire that will fall leaving thousands jobless and stunting other industries.
